THE SURREY
Charles “Chic” Seminerio built the Surry Restaurant at 80 West Streetsboro Road in Hudson in 1964. This was a very upscale restaurant. Samie previously owned the Chanticleer in Fairlawn. In August 1966, the Brown Derby opened in the old Surry Building. It displayed a large steer replica for the opening.
TED AND MARY’S/HUDSON’S ON THE GREEN
In 1946, Francis Thomas built the restaurant at 80 North Main Street in Hudson and called it Thomas’. He sold it to Howard Creekbaun, who opened Howard’s, and then Jack Peace purchased it and called it Peace’s. Mary and Ted Pavlantos bought it on their honeymoon in 1951, and son Mike took it over in 1976. When the Pavlantoses bought it, it had pinball machines and jukeboxes. It was a coffee shop with a lunch counter, a place to go for morning breaks if you worked in downtown Hudson.
In 2006, John Altomare and sons J.J. and Kevin, known as the “three foodies,” opened Hudson’s Restaurant on the Green in the former Ted and Mary’s in Hudson. This is a casual eatery with burgers, comfort food and an extensive martini menu. In 2012, they opened a Copley location, but it closed in 2015.
TIP TOP DRIVE-IN
Located at 3428 Darrow Road in Stow, the Tip Top has been around since the late ’20s, when it was a local family barbecue pit. It has seen many changes since then. It became the Flag Pole, Captain Jack’s, Around the Clock and Charlie’s. The building has grown in size since the 1920s too! This is a casual place to go for breakfast or lunch.
TOMMY’S CAFÉ/TOMMY BRUNO’S STEAKHOUSE
Tommy’s Café was opened in 1939 at 2225 Front Street in Cuyahoga Falls by Tommy Bruno. The café closed in 1978. The name was changed to Tommy Bruno’s Steakhouse in the 1960s.
There was an apartment upstairs from the café that was turned into the “Skylight Room.” It was run by Anita, Tommy’s wife, and was said to be the place where attorneys and bankers went for lunch.
